we didn&#8217;t have to wait\u00c2\u00a024 hours for the first 2011 terrapin hatchling to emerge.\u00c2\u00a0 This afternoon, shortly after we discovered a pipped egg in Nest 368 (see posting immediately below), we found a hatchling near the bottom of the nest that was scratching its way to\u00c2\u00a0freedom.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/PR91k7bewGw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/PR91k7bewGw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Terrapin Hatchling Emerges to Freedom<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hatchlings use their temporary egg tooth to pierce the hard shell.\u00c2\u00a0 Once a hole has been cut through the egg, the hatchling widens the opening with its sharp and strong claws.\u00c2\u00a0 About four to five days after the egg is &#8220;pipped,&#8221;
