Abigail Brown &amp; Friends<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Diamondback terrapins in the Taunton River?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Twenty-five miles from open water and tucked into a small protected bay ten miles from the mouth of the Taunton River, we find an isolated population of threatened diamondback terrapins\u00c2\u00a0more than\u00c2\u00a025 miles its closest neighbor.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-007.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6442\" title=\"abs 007 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-007-480.jpg\" alt=\"abs 007 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-007-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-007-480-300x249.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Assonet Bay Shores Beach Terrapin Nesting Site<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Four years ago, Turtle Journal&#8217;s Don Lewis confirmed the existence of this terrapin population when he found forty hatched and depredated nests concentrated\u00c2\u00a0at Assonet Bay Shores beach on Wescott Island in Assonet Bay (see map above).\u00c2\u00a0 Since then, Turtle Journal has partnered with local resident volunteers to document these turtles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-001-840.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6440\" title=\"abs 001 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-001-480.jpg\" alt=\"abs 001 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-001-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-001-480-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Carl Brodeur Proudly Shows Terrapin Eggs<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Leading the investigative team in Assonet Bay is Carl Brodeur of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arborcareropes.com\" target=\"_blank\">Arborcare with Ropes &#8216;n Saddles<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0who lives on Wescott Island and has been a powerful advocate within the community for diamondback terrapins as a bellwether species within the bay to reveal the\u00c2\u00a0state of the local environment.\u00c2\u00a0 Carl captured the first terrapin specimen in Assonet Bay and has been actively engaged in documenting this local population.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-003-840.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6436\" title=\"abs 003 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-003-480.jpg\" alt=\"abs 003 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-003-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/abs-003-480-300x119.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Three Diamondback Terrapin Females at Assonet Bay Shores<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">On June 6th, Carl found three mature female terrapins coming ashore onto the beach at Assonet Bay Shores for a nesting run.\u00c2\u00a0 These beautiful turtles, all heavy with eggs, show the same general characteristics and size as terrapins found in Barrington, Rhode Island, the nearest known neighboring population 25 miles away\u00c2\u00a0&#8230;
