stupor to snatch an easy meal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nest-996-18-sep-08-006-840.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-536\" title=\"nest-996-18-sep-08-006-840\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nest-996-18-sep-08-006-840.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nest-996-18-sep-08-006-840.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nest-996-18-sep-08-006-840-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Lethargic Hatchling and Potentially Viable Egg<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nest 996 fell victim to secretive plant and insect predators.\u00c2\u00a0 As we excavated the nest in the morning chill, we encountered egg after egg that had been attacked by roots, stilting embryo development and piercing the shell.\u00c2\u00a0 Once the egg is cracked, insects stream in and consume the organic material.\u00c2\u00a0 Near the bottom of the nest, we found a seemingly lifeless hatchling wrapped in an eggshell that we would have instantly discarded as non-viable.\u00c2\u00a0 Peeling the shell away, we found a healthy, if motionless hatchling.\u00c2\u00a0 And at the bottom of the nest, we removed one potentially viable egg that has been carefully transplanted to the &#8220;second chance&#8221; bucket where eggs go to finish incubation and hopefully achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/BXpudImclZQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/BXpudImclZQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Excavating Six Sluggish Hatchlings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few feet away we discovered a concavity in the sand that indicated that a pipped nest might lie beneath.\u00c2\u00a0 About four inches under the surface we found a half dozen hatchlings, some pipped but still inside eggshells, but others just snoozing the chill away.\u00c2\u00a0 Check out these sluggish babies once they are\u00c2\u00a0excavated as they lie about like cordwood, waiting for sunshine to warm their bodies before dashing to freedom.<\/p>\n<p>September weather in the Great White North can be cruel for tiny hatchlings.\u00c2\u00a0 But a saving hand can make a world of difference for this threatened species by dramatically increasing the number of live hatchlings that enter the ecosystem each year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Raw, blustery September has gripped terrapin nesting sites on the Outer Cape.\u00c2\u00a0 As temperatures plunge, hatchlings hunker down in their underground hide-aways, snoozing in the warm darkness, hoping and waiting for a sunny respite to heat up the sand and their bodies for the sprint from nest to safety in the abutting nursery habitat.
