{"id":5189,"date":"2001-05-12T18:08:50","date_gmt":"2001-05-12T23:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=5189"},"modified":"2010-03-10T18:28:53","modified_gmt":"2010-03-10T23:28:53","slug":"of-things-big-and-small-%e2%80%94-12-may-2001","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=5189","title":{"rendered":"Of Things Big and Small \u00e2\u20ac\u201d 12 May 2001"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5190\" title=\"05-12-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-1.jpg\" alt=\"05-12-1\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Release of Over-Wintered Hatchling Rescued from Coyote Predation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">The morning broke warm and bright with a southwest breeze bathing the Cape in our first wave of summer humidity.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, a perfect day to release Hatchling 001, dubbed Ott, who was rescued from the coyote track yesterday.\u00c2\u00a0 Overnight she first soaked in fresh water, and then ambled about her terrarium and burrowed into brackish mud.\u00c2\u00a0 Within those few hours she had rehydrated and double her weight to over 6 grams.\u00c2\u00a0 And she was a lot more alert and active, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5191\" title=\"05-12-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-2.jpg\" alt=\"05-12-2\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-2.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Hatchling Disappears under Wrack Line<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Released in the wrack at Turtle Point, she crawled over to the cover of a sea lavender and soon disappeared beneath the marsh hay.\u00c2\u00a0 Bon chance!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5192\" title=\"05-12-3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-3.jpg\" alt=\"05-12-3\" width=\"480\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-3.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-3-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Mature Female Terrapin #363 Swims through the Rip<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">In Blackfish Creek the tides have swung into mid-phase mediocrity \u00e2\u20ac\u201d not very good for turtle observations.\u00c2\u00a0 But on the off chance, I dragged the dinghy onto the rip and scanned the channel for passing terrapins.\u00c2\u00a0 As the tide reached dead low, a mature female appeared in the rapid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Terrapin 363 has been under observation by our researchers since June 1996 when she was first discovered during a nesting run on Lieutenant Island.\u00c2\u00a0 Then she measured 17 centimeters long and weighed 920 grams.\u00c2\u00a0 Three years later and twice last year, #363 was found nesting on Lieutenant Island.\u00c2\u00a0 Today was the first time she had been seen in Blackfish Creek.\u00c2\u00a0 She now stretches 17.5 centimeters and hits the scales at 1024 grams \u00e2\u20ac\u201d over 200 grams (!!!) larger than her weight on 29 June 2000 just after she had laid 14 viable eggs in a Lieutenant Island driveway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-4-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5193\" title=\"05-12-4 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-4-480.jpg\" alt=\"05-12-4 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-4-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/05-12-4-480-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Female Terrapin #363 Meets Mothers&#8217;
