{"id":4720,"date":"2001-01-23T04:55:21","date_gmt":"2001-01-23T09:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=4720"},"modified":"2010-03-03T15:04:03","modified_gmt":"2010-03-03T20:04:03","slug":"stranded-harp-seal-in-fresh-brook-marsh-23-january-2001-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=4720","title":{"rendered":"Stranded Harp Seal in Fresh Brook Marsh &#8212; 23 January 2001 (morning)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Last night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s high tide brought an ailing harp juvenile seal into the Fresh Brook marsh northeast of Doctors Hill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-1-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4722\" title=\"01-23a-1 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-1-480.jpg\" alt=\"01-23a-1 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-1-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-1-480-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Harp Seal Pup off Fresh Brook Creek<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Seemingly well nourished, this pup was nonetheless unresponsive to my approach.\u00c2\u00a0 Blood traces were observed in each location where the seal had moved across the snow covered marsh.\u00c2\u00a0 Closer examination revealed no wounds; the blood had exuded from the mouth.\u00c2\u00a0 Small amounts of whitish fluid gurgled from the nostrils.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-2-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4723\" title=\"01-23a-2 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-2-480.jpg\" alt=\"01-23a-2 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-2-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-2-480-273x300.jpg 273w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><em><strong>Ailing Pup Seal<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Doctor John Kelly of Eastham was gracious enough to evaluate this seal at his animal hospital; he decided that it was not so far gone as to be euthanized.\u00c2\u00a0 At the request of the Mammal Stranding Network, he administered 200 milliliters of nutrient solution by stomach tube.\u00c2\u00a0 Encountering some initial resistance, Dr. Kelly x-rayed the seal, but found no blockage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-3-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4724\" title=\"01-23a-3 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-3-480.jpg\" alt=\"01-23a-3 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-3-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/01\/01-23a-3-480-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Stranded Harp Seal Pup<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">After treatment, this harp seal was returned to the salt marsh near where it was spotted this morning.\u00c2\u00a0 The original location is frequented by coyotes, foraging at low tides, and the channels in Fresh Brook do not provide easy access back to the bay.\u00c2\u00a0 The seal now rests on the banks of Black Duck Creek several hundred yards southwest of the Lieutenant Island Bridge.\u00c2\u00a0 We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll check on her overnight progress in the morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s high tide brought an ailing harp juvenile seal into the Fresh Brook marsh northeast of Doctors Hill.
