center\">\u00c2\u00a0<strong><em>Kemp&#8217;s Ridley Sea Turtle at Rider&#8217;s Beach in Truro<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00c2\u00a0Temperatures dipped below 30 under Arctic crisp skies.\u00c2\u00a0 Northwest winds blowing 10 to 15 mph focused our sea turtle patrols on south Eastham, Orleans and Brewster, the inside arc of the elbow.\u00c2\u00a0 Twenty miles to the north the Pilgrim Monument, decked in Christmas white lights, marked the Cape\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fist across an inky black bay in Provincetown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">This afternoon the 10th Kemp\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ridley was recovered, dead, from Rider\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Beach in south Truro.\u00c2\u00a0 This first Arctic blast with plunging water temperatures bodes ill for any ridleys remaining in Cape Cod Bay.\u00c2\u00a0 Even the bulkier loggerheads will begin cold-stranding as winter takes hold at the end of the universe.\u00c2\u00a0 So, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s imperative to rescue these turtles as soon as they wash ashore, to prevent death from hypothermia \u00e2\u20ac\u201d all of which translates to night patrols.<\/p>\n<p><a high tide came a little before 10 <span><strong>P.M.<\/strong><\/span> and our first find was another dead seal beached between Point of Rocks and Breakwater in Brewster.<\/p>\n<p><a Skaket Beach in Orleans, a gannet had floated in with the tide.\u00c2\u00a0 These pelagic dive\u00c2\u00a0bombers drop from dizzying heights to fish the Cape\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s waters.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes, though, they hit at a bad angle or pick a spot just too shallow for their Olympian dives, and necks break from the strain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/11-24-4-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4519\" title=\"11-24-4 480\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Kemp&#8217;s Ridley Washes Ashore at Crosby Landing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">At Crosby Landing, the 11th ridley of the season was found washing ashore with the tide.\u00c2\u00a0 Retrieved from breaking surf, she seemed stone cold to the touch.\u00c2\u00a0 Back at the Sanctuary this tiny ridley of just 21.5 cm carapace length and 1.5 kilograms weight registered an internal body temperature of only 33.8 degrees.\u00c2\u00a0 Her eyes were dehydrated and fixed and it was impossible to determine whether she was, in fact, still alive.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/11-24-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" Plastron<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, cleaned and lubricated, she was placed in the cold recovery room at ~ 42 degrees to begin the long thawing process.\u00c2\u00a0 Adding to her
