found blindly crawling down a dirt road on Lieutenant Island, is gradually become more active as she warms up.\u00c2\u00a0 Still not as active as a normal, healthy September hatchling, she began to move her eyes beneath closed lids this morning.\u00c2\u00a0 As she sun-bathed and swam in the warm wet tank today, she opened first her right eye and then her left one.<\/p>\n<p><a doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t keep them open all the time, she is tracking movement with her eyes when they are open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-3-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4440\" title=\"11-09-3 480\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Ancient Female Terrapin #7 in Better Days<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Terrapin 7 (shown below), a very mature female last seen swimming in Chipman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cove on 15 July 1999.\u00c2\u00a0 She was found dead today in the salt marsh wrack of Duck Creek behind the Mobil Station on Route 6.\u00c2\u00a0 In July she weighed 910 grams, measured 17.2 centimeters carapace length, and sported a very distinctive vee notch in her 7 marginal.\u00c2\u00a0 In 1985 she was spotted making a nesting on Lieutenant Island opposite Indian Neck\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Field Point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-4-5-480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4441\" title=\"11-09-4-5 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-4-5-480.jpg\" alt=\"11-09-4-5 480\" width=\"480\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-4-5-480.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-4-5-480-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Desiccated Remains of Terrapin #7<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Her desiccated remains were discovered far back in the Duck Creek marshes, which feeds into the northeast corner of Chipman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cove.\u00c2\u00a0 All soft tissue had decomposed leaving only bones and a very dry shell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4442\" title=\"11-09-6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-6.jpg\" alt=\"11-09-6\" width=\"436\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-6.jpg 436w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2000\/11\/11-09-6-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Recently Emerged Terrapin Nest<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">On the bright side, the mutts and I stumbled onto a newly hatched nest on Lieutenant Island.\u00c2\u00a0 It was located on a small, sandy plateau between the high tide wrack and the bearberry hill behind the Landau cottage.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the shells were on the surface near a slit in the ground.\u00c2\u00a0 Excavating this nest, which abutted Nest 81 laid by Terrapin 1028 on 10 July and hatched on 25 September, I found one non-viable egg, two hatchlings predated in their shells, and a few more shards from hatched and emerged turtles.\u00c2\u00a0 A total of 13 terrapins hatched from this
