Lieutenant Island Bridge at Blue Moon Flood Tide<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Wintry weather and high tides combine to\u00c2\u00a0thwart access to Turtle Journal’s prime research site on Lieutenant Island.\u00c2\u00a0 A\u00c2\u00a0weekend-long nor’wester dumped nearly a foot of icy snow, and dangerously low wind chills clogged the shoreline with ice floes.<\/p>\n

Waves Flash-Freeze on the Beach<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Temperatures have fallen so hard that waves transform to slush as they reach\u00c2\u00a0the beach.\u00c2\u00a0 As though stuck in DVD pause, waves flash-freeze as soon as they touch super-cooled beach sand.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant Island Road Two Hours Before High Tide<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

With\u00c2\u00a0slush and snow, ice floes have begun to form and to pile up each high tide in the salt marshes and channels surrounding Lieutenant Island on Outer Cape Cod.<\/p>\n

Turtle Point\u00c2\u00a0 Inaccessible Behind Lieutenant Island Bridge<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Snow covered Turtle Point on Lieutenant Island looks cold and starkly beautiful behind ice floes,\u00c2\u00a0flooded bridge and sunken causeway.\u00c2\u00a0 Under the ice, snoozing terrapins are comfortably\u00c2\u00a0burrowed in a deep blanket of muddy ooze.\u00c2\u00a0 Under the snowy dunes, 2009 hatchlings are buried a foot\u00c2\u00a0down\u00c2\u00a0in upland hibernacula.\u00c2\u00a0 All are fast asleep until spring thaw arrives in late April or early May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
