{"id":3593,"date":"2009-11-26T15:01:48","date_gmt":"2009-11-26T20:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=3593"},"modified":"2010-01-16T09:39:18","modified_gmt":"2010-01-16T14:39:18","slug":"torpedo-ray-strands-in-foggy-wellfleet-harbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=3593","title":{"rendered":"Torpedo Ray Strands in Foggy Wellfleet Harbor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-006-840.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"448\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3595\" title=\"cc torpedo ray 006 840\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-006-840.jpg\" alt=\"cc torpedo ray 006 840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-006-840.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-006-840-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Wellfleet Harbor Enshrouded in Holmesian Fog<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">With fog so thick you could\u00c2\u00a0be forgiven for mistaking Wellfleet Harbor for the Thames, Outer Cape Cod enjoys lingering mild temperatures as Thanksgiving dawns.\u00c2\u00a0 Chilled surface waters and\u00c2\u00a0warm bay\u00c2\u00a0breezes\u00c2\u00a0stir a ghostly\u00c2\u00a0brew of mists, clouds and dampened echoes.\u00c2\u00a0 While not actually &#8220;raining,&#8221; you soak clean through to the bone just walking\u00c2\u00a0down the beach.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tJJbGlLA2lw&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tJJbGlLA2lw&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Small Torpedo Ray Emerges from Fog<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">A stranded torpedo ray\u00c2\u00a0had been\u00c2\u00a0reported by cove residents earlier this week and had been spied by Mass Audubon\u00c2\u00a0staff last weekend near the boat ramp\u00c2\u00a0at Shirttail Point.\u00c2\u00a0 The last sighting was &#8220;under the high bank at Chipman&#8217;s Cove,&#8221; which stretches from Duck Creek\u00c2\u00a0in the north to the springtime terrapin mating aggregation in the south.\u00c2\u00a0 From Old Pier Landing we walked the bank south and found only a decomposing 7-foot ocean sunfish that had been buried, but\u00c2\u00a0was now re-surfacing through weathering tides.\u00c2\u00a0 We headed north and discovered the torpedo ray carcass in front of a seawall and high bank opposite the town pier at Shirttail Point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-001-840.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"602\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3597\" title=\"cc torpedo ray 001 840\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-001-840.jpg\" alt=\"cc torpedo ray 001 840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-001-840.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/cc-torpedo-ray-001-840-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><strong><em>Small Torpedo Ray in Wellfleet Harbor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">This carcass had been heavily depredated and was quite decomposed.\u00c2\u00a0 It measured just a tad over one foot wide and only two\u00c2\u00a0&amp; a half foot long from snout to the trailing edge of the tail fin.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">Information on torpedo rays (<em>Torpedo nobiliana<\/em>)\u00c2\u00a0can be found at the Turtle Journal posting, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=1448\" target=\"_blank\">Shocking Discovery!
