Rehabbed Juvenile Loggerhead\u00c2\u00a0(Caretta caretta)\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fletcher, a juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta<\/em>), was found cold-stunned, upside-down and below the high water mark on Fisher Beach in Truro on Outer Cape Cod on the morning of 29 November 2008.\u00c2\u00a0 Discovered by one of the\u00c2\u00a0Mass Audubon volunteers who patrol the beaches each fall in search of stranded sea turtles, Fletcher was rushed to the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>, stabilized there and then transported to the New England Aquarium<\/a> for medical treatment.<\/p>\n

After\u00c2\u00a0initial\u00c2\u00a0medical care\u00c2\u00a0at the aquarium, Fletcher was transferred to the National Marine Life Center<\/a> for rehabilitation during the long, cold winter.\u00c2\u00a0 When found hypothermic on the beach in November, Fletcher weighed a little less than 52 pounds.\u00c2\u00a0 Today, Fletcher approaches 70 pounds and\u00c2\u00a0energetically awaits release back into the wild.<\/p>\n

“Fletcher” Ready for Return to the Wild<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the next few days, Fletcher will be released off the Mid-Atlantic Coast into the Gulf Stream to resume a sea turtle’s life in the deep blue sea.\u00c2\u00a0 Today, Fletcher will be equipped with a satellite tracking tag so that this sea turtle’s travels can be plotted and studied by researchers.\u00c2\u00a0 We hope to\u00c2\u00a0monitor Fletcher’s\u00c2\u00a0satellite signal\u00c2\u00a0in the coming months and report\u00c2\u00a0Fletcher’s progress both here and on the National Marine Life Center’s site<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
