Terrapins off Long Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.offshoremag.net\/ME2\/Default.asp\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lloyd-harbor-large-scale.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1899\" title=\"lloyd-harbor-large-scale\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lloyd-harbor-large-scale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lloyd-harbor-large-scale.jpg 1208w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/lloyd-harbor-large-scale-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">During this special\u00c2\u00a0time of year\u00c2\u00a0when\u00c2\u00a0warm seasonal greetings\u00c2\u00a0are openly exchanged\u00c2\u00a0among\u00c2\u00a0friends and strangers\u00c2\u00a0alike as tokens of good\u00c2\u00a0will and shared community, Turtle Journal received the best gift of all: the present of presence.\u00c2\u00a0 Two dedicated boaters from the Greater New York metropolitan area separately called the hotline (508-274-5108) to report\u00c2\u00a0the presence\u00c2\u00a0of diamondback terrapins on the north shore of Long Island this past summer.\u00c2\u00a0 While we won&#8217;t reveal the\u00c2\u00a0exact area to protect the privacy of these shy and elusive critters, we hope that other boaters and beach goers along the Long Island shore will let us know about other sightings.\u00c2\u00a0 This information will be provided to researchers at <a href=\"http:\/\/people.hofstra.edu\/Russell_L_Burke\/terrapin-nyc.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Hofstra University<\/a> and conservationists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/nytts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York Turtle &amp; Tortoise Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.offshoremag.net\/ME2\/Default.asp\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1900\" title=\"ne-boating-cover-840\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ne-boating-cover-840.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ne-boating-cover-840.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ne-boating-cover-840-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">These avid boaters\u00c2\u00a0recently read <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.offshoremag.net\/ME2\/Default.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Boating<\/a><\/strong><\/em> editor Tom Richardson&#8217;s article in the December issue, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offshoremag.net\/ME2\/dirmod.asp?sid=C9D898ACF1E8413F8934AD2017C5CEB5&amp;nm=DESTINATION+ARCHIVES&amp;type=Publishing&amp;mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&amp;mid=8F3A7027421841978F18BE895F87F791&amp;tier=4&amp;id=A59F6C1F0549413DA878A6D5C0C4685D\" target=\"_blank\">Terrapins Among Us<\/a>, and recalled their summer encounter with turtles on the north shore of Long Island near Huntington and Oyster Bay.\u00c2\u00a0 In several decades of boating in Long Island sound, they had never seen a terrapin.\u00c2\u00a0 Then, on this one day as they slipped into a protected estuary and steered to a sheltered anchorage near\u00c2\u00a0a salt marsh, they spotted nine diamondback terrapins!\u00c2\u00a0 When they saw Tom&#8217;s story, they sent him an email and followed up with the phone call to the Turtle Journal team.\u00c2\u00a0 They were surprised that after all these years patroling the sound, and poking into protected estuaries, they had finally caught a glimpse of these elusive creatures that have been called\u00c2\u00a0a &#8220;Big Foot&#8221;
