style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Tiny One Inch Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) Hatchling<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday proved perfect for turtles and turtlologists. \u00c2\u00a0With luck and pluck, the Turtle Journal team encountered four species of local turtles. \u00c2\u00a0Sue Wieber Nourse started the streak by finding this perfect little painted turtle (<em>Chrysemys\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>picta<\/em>) hatchling basking in a SouthCoast bog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/y-4T-pth-0000-5-grams-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Tiny Over-Wintered Painted Turtle Hatchling<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tiny critter&#8217;s shell measured 2.46 centimeters long, less than an inch, and the hatchling weighed a mere 5 grams (less than 0.2 ounces).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/y-4T-pth-plastron-000-630.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Tiny Painted Turtle Hatchling with Absorbed and Healed Yolk Sac<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Examining the center of this hatchling&#8217;s abdominal scutes, we observed the healed remnant of the absorbed yolk sac, clearly indicating that this baby had been born in the fall and recently emerged from its first winter&#8217;s slumber.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/y08-snapper-hunt-103-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Large Male Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the opposite end of the spectrum from the tiny painted hatchling stands this large male snapping turtle. \u00c2\u00a0We snagged this 35-pound specimen at a local SouthCoast bog. \u00c2\u00a0The adventure of that capture is tiny hatchling and large snapper, we observed a bright yellow, almost glow-in-the-dark male box turtle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/y-4T-box-turtle-1110-in-hand-001-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full shell length and 1 1\/4 pounds, this fellow sported the most riveting crimson eyes, complementing a color scheme that screamed &#8220;gaudy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/y-4T-release-may-3-2014-003-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full and several pairs of spotted turtles (<em>Clemmys guttata<\/em>) in a local SouthCoast bog.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Release of Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Spring in the Great White North has been cold, late and lacking any heat spikes. \u00c2\u00a0By this date, we should have been able to add a fifth local species, the Northern diamondback terrapin (<em>Malaclemys terrapin terrapin<\/em>), to the list for May 3rd. \u00c2\u00a0As reported in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/?p=14411\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Amazing First Terrapin Capture in Windy Sippican Harbor<\/strong><\/a>, we captured our first and only terrapin of the 2014 season on April 14th. \u00c2\u00a0Since then, the weather has turned cold, windy and punctuated by storms. \u00c2\u00a0Terrapins have plunged back to the bottom, turned off the lights, covered themselves with another layer of ooze, and are waiting for a saner weather pattern to set in. \u00c2\u00a0Fortunately, the Turtle Journal team has kept busy with spotted turtles who are considerably more cold tolerant and less fussy than diamondback terrapins. \u00c2\u00a0Give spotteds a bit
