team patrols SouthCoast beaches each morning throughout the Spring season.\u00c2\u00a0 This morning, as Sue Wieber Nourse and Rufus the Turtle Dog walked a Buzzards Bay barrier beach, they spotted pairs of spawning horseshoe crabs scatter along the shoreline in the morning high tide.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a Front)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This morning&#8217;s ~ 7:30 am high tide brought the first evidence of spawning horseshoe crabs this season.\u00c2\u00a0 The pair above well illustrates a spawning pair.\u00c2\u00a0 The larger female is in front with the smaller male grasping onto her shell, so that he can be Johnnie-on-the-spot when she deposits her eggs along the tide line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/spawn-002-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Spawning Horseshoe Crabs on SouthCoast Barrier Beach<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sue has been observing these SouthCoast barrier beaches for many years now as principal of\u00c2\u00a0Turtle Journal and formerly as director of Tabor Academy&#8217;s Marine Science Center and as inaugural holder of the Jaeger Chair for Marine Studies.\u00c2\u00a0 She reports that today&#8217;s spawning burst, while only containing a handful of crabs,\u00c2\u00a0still represents the largest number of\u00c2\u00a0specimens she has yet seen in this location.\u00c2\u00a0 Horseshoe crabs had nearly been extirpated\u00c2\u00a0on the\u00c2\u00a0SouthCoast by harvesters who chop them up for cheap whelk
