Turtle Journal team discovered a sweet 7-year-old female diamondback terrapin who had joined the Sippican Harbor mating aggregation this season.\u00c2\u00a0 A 2005 hatchling, this lovel young lady disappeared during the &#8220;lost (juvenile) years,&#8221; only to resurface today as a fully grown adult who will help restore the severely threatened Buzzards Bay population.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/post-35-release-005-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img #000000;\">As we paddled kayaks into\u00c2\u00a0the Head of Sippican Harbor, we spotted a\u00c2\u00a0couple of\u00c2\u00a0terrapins snorkeling in the mid afternoon sunshine.\u00c2\u00a0 In a few weeks, as water temperatures rise, this mating area will be filled with many male and female turtles looking love.\u00c2\u00a0 Today, only a handful of terrapins are active.\u00c2\u00a0 Capturing even one will be a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/post-sue-action-001-960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" #000000;\">Netting terrapins from a kayak is a high skill activity in the best of conditions.\u00c2\u00a0 Today hardly qualified as best conditions\u00c2\u00a0with a stiff southerly breeze whipping up wave action and stirring the water into a frothy mocha latte.\u00c2\u00a0 Game for the challenge, Sue Wieber Nourse charged toward the snorkeling turtle with net at the ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p smoothly guided the kayak into position and swooped up the turtle racing across the bottom of the harbor.\u00c2\u00a0 This gorgeous young female proved a new recruit to the adult terrapin population, a young 7-year-old female who had just reached sexual maturity and will be nesting for the first time this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a #35<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back on shore, we measured and marked her as diamondback terrapin #35.\u00c2\u00a0 Her shell measured\u00c2\u00a0nearly 7\u00c2\u00a0inches long and 5.6 inches wide.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting to\u00c2\u00a0contrast\u00c2\u00a0her\u00c2\u00a0with Cape Cod\u00c2\u00a0terrapins that\u00c2\u00a0don&#8217;t reach maturity until at least\u00c2\u00a0one\u00c2\u00a0year\u00c2\u00a0later\u00c2\u00a0and yet are still nearly an inch shorter in length.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color:
