center;\"><em><strong>Piping Plover Foraging on Sandy Neck Beach<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turtle Journal visited Sandy Neck in Barnstable on April 1st to enjoy a sunny, if chilly Sunday morning.\u00c2\u00a0 As we crossed from salt marsh side to bay beach at Cut #1 (No Vehicle Access) about a half mile east of the asphalt road and parking area, we spotted three piping plovers (<em>Charadrius melodus<\/em>) foraging along the shoreline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sandy-neck-840.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10064\" title=\"sandy neck 480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turtlejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sandy-neck-480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"264\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Rolling Sand Dunes of Barnstable&#8217;s Sandy Neck<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The southern salt marsh side of Sandy Neck marks\u00c2\u00a0an extremely productive Northern Diamondback Terrapin (<em>Malaclemys terrapin terrapin<\/em>)\u00c2\u00a0habitat in Massachusetts, second only to Wellfleet Bay.\u00c2\u00a0 The rolling sand dunes between southern marsh and northern beach stretch for a third of a mile,\u00c2\u00a0supporting\u00c2\u00a0viable center;\"><em><strong>Sandy Neck Piping Plover<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foraging plovers were wedged between advancing tide and constant stream of off-road-vehicles driving along a rutted track\u00c2\u00a0gouged between\u00c2\u00a0dunes and waterline.\u00c2\u00a0 When disturbed by beach walkers\u00c2\u00a0or vehicles, these birds would take flight and
